MOUNT IDA – Superintendent Mike White announced Monday night that after conducting interviews he was ready to recommend a construction manager for the safe room project to be built on the elementary school campus.

The monthly meeting was held Monday, April 20, in the High School Auditorium to provide ample space for social distancing.

White inherited the safe room project which is finally moving forward after a delay in funding. He announced that after conducting interviews they had decided to hire Phoenix Contractors to serve as construction manager for the project.

He shared a rough draft of the floor plans for the safe room to all board members. White stressed that this was just a rough draft, but he wanted to give them some idea of what it would look like. He added that the price was going to be higher than initially discussed, but that was to be expected.

The safe room will provide a safe place for students and members of the community to go to during storms. It will be used as classroom space also.

The Board filled three positions.

Crystal Leach was hired as an elementary school math teacher.

T.J. Wilson was hired to teach elementary P.E. and serve as an assistant football coach.

Tabitha Tyson was hired to teach social studies.

Elementary Principal Donna Whisenhunt reported that 198 students participated in the school’s lunch program. A week’s worth of meals are prepared and distributed each Monday. Bus riders have their lunches delivered on their bus routes and other lunches are available for pick up at the cafeteria. For more information please contact your campus office.

Whisenhunt also announced that the school’s “Feed A Lion” program has raised a little over $1,700 with over 30 accounts receiving assistance. The “Feed A Lion” program provides financial assistance to juniors and seniors who have large past due lunch bills which could affect their participation in graduation. Any additional funds are used to assist other students with large past due accounts.

Principal Whisenhunt joined High School Principal Ron Maguire in thanking all the staff, administration and volunteers who have worked to help with AMI packets and lunches during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis.

The board approved the 2017-18 Legislative Audit.

The board approved school improvement plans for the 2020-21 school year.

The board approved special education district applications.
