The Montgomery County News is excited to announce that we have 11 entries listed among the Winner’s List for the 2020 Arkansas Press Association Editorial Contest. The contest recognizes the work of newspapers and their coverage of local events.
The Montgomery County News competes in the small weekly division. The winner of each category will be chosen from those listed on the Winner’s List. An item on the Winner’s List will generally receive either a First, Second, or Third Place award with some receiving an Honorable Mention. These winners are judged by Journalists from another state with entries coming from across Arkansas.
Winners will be announced at the APA Annual Conference September 26. The conference will be conducted virtually this year.
Sports coverage led the way with The Montgomery County News recording one entry in the Sports Feature Story category with an article regarding local professional anger Mark Davis being named to the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame. The article ran in the February 21, 2019 issue. There were two entry to make the Winner’s List in the Sports News Story category. An article titled “Arkansas High Country Race weaves its way through Montgomery County, which ran in the June 13, 2019 issue, and an article regarding Mount Ida’s decision to stick with 11 man football which ran in the March 14, 2019 issue were the two entries.
The Montgomery County News had three of five entries make the Winner’s List in the Sports Action Photo category. The earliest entry was from the January 10, 2019 issue titled “Arkansas Vault Club opens season with Jack Frost Meet”. A photo titled “Hurdling the competition” ran in the April 11, 2019 issue and “I’m not done yet!” ran in the September 15, 2019 issue.
The winners in the sports categories highlight the diversity within Montgomery County with featured sports ranging from bass fishing to cycling, track and field, baseball, and football.
Other items to make the Winner’s List include an article titled “Act of Kindness draws state and national attention”. This article was entered in the Feature Story category and chronicles the friendship of Tanner Wilson and Brandon Qualls. The pair were seniors at Caddo Hills last year. Tanner purchased a motorized wheel chair for his friend Brandon.
A headline titled “Over the river and through the woods” was among the Winner’s List in the Headline Writing category. The headline ran in the April 4, 2019 issue and was the headline for the Ouachita Challenge article.
A photo that ran with an article about the release of an eagle into the wild that ran in the January 3, 2019 issue was on the Winner’s List in the News Photo category. A
A photo titled “AAAHHH!!!” which ran in the December 5, 2019 issue was listed on the Winner’s List in the Feature Photo category. A photo from the Birds of Prey show at Caddo Hills School District which ran in the January 31, 2019 issue was also on the Feature Photo Winner’s List.
