MOUNT IDA – Bobby Barrett Elementary School staff have come up with a great way to keep students reading this Summer with the placement of “Book Nooks” around Mount Ida.
Literacy experts agree that one of the most important steps to literacy learning is reading level retention through the summer break. Many kids go home at the end of the school year and don’t read again until they return to school.
While the local libraries are a great source for summer reading, not everyone can make it to town during their business hours. In an effort to help increase access to books during the summer months, Bobby Barrett Elementary School has placed several “Book Nooks” around Mount Ida. They can be found between El Diamante Restaurant and Shack Attack Pizza, both entrances at Bob’s Food City, Family Dollar Store and Dollar General Store.
The “Book Nooks” are the brainchild of elementary school librarian Melissa Austin. They are simple to use. You just walk up, open the door and get a book. Once you have read the book simply return it and get another book.
